Why WaterfallsNearYou exists

Search for "waterfalls near me" and you usually get the same handful of famous falls. Meanwhile, thousands of named waterfalls sit a short drive from where people live, recorded on federal topographic maps but missing from most travel sites. WaterfallsNearYou was built to close that gap: one page for every officially named waterfall in the United States, organized around the towns people actually live in and travel to.

What you will find here

Where our data comes from

Every waterfall location starts with the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the federal government's official repository of domestic geographic names. GNIS records each named waterfall's position, county, topographic quadrangle, alternate historical names and, for some features, written descriptions and naming history. GNIS data is in the public domain.

Nearby towns come from GeoNames (licensed CC BY 4.0), using places with 1,000 or more residents. Distances on this site are straight-line distances; driving and hiking distances are longer.

Where available, listings are enriched with public business information from Google Maps listings, such as visitor ratings, hours, phone numbers, websites and photos. Those details are refreshed periodically and can change without notice.
