Getting there
Canyon Falls sits about 9.3 miles south of L'Anse in Baraga County. Google lists the address as L'Anse Township, MI 49946.
Open directions in Google Maps or Apple Maps, or view the map on the Canyon Falls listing. Navigation apps sometimes route onto seasonal forest roads, so check road status if you are heading into the mountains.
Michigan's falls are spread across the Ottawa and Hiawatha national forests, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, state parks such as Tahquamenon Falls and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, state forests and scenic sites, and large tracts of commercial forest. State parks require a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry, and some national forest sites have their own fees. Many lesser-known falls in Gogebic, Baraga and Marquette counties are reached by unmarked two-track roads that can be washed out, muddy or blocked by fallen trees, so high-clearance vehicles and offline maps help. Cell service is spotty. Hazards include cold, fast water in spring, steep riverbanks, slippery rock, and remote terrain. Bring insect protection from late May through July.
What to bring
This checklist is tailored to Canyon Falls based on what visitors report and the conditions typical of Michigan. For the complete list, see our waterfall hike packing guide.
- Offline map and coordinates. Save 46.62355, -88.47597 and download offline maps; cell service is often weak near waterfalls.
- Shoes with real grip. Rock near falling water stays wet and slick even in dry weather.
- Water and a snack. More than you think you need, even for a short walk.
- A light rain layer. Spray from the falls and quick-moving showers can soak you.
- Camera and a small tripod. Visitors have shared 1,049 photos of it; a tripod lets you shoot silky water in low light.
- Warm layers. Northern and mountain weather changes quickly; spring and fall mornings can be near freezing.
- Headlamp. In case your visit runs later than planned; check sunset time in the conditions panel above.
How to prepare
Timing
Spring snowmelt is the main event. In the Upper Peninsula, melt typically runs from April into late May, depending on elevation and distance from Lake Superior, and the falls are at their most powerful then. Some seasonal roads and two-tracks remain snowbound or muddy into May. By June, black flies and mosquitoes are thick in the woods, especially near wetlands, and flows begin to settle. Summer brings comfortable temperatures and the busiest crowds at Tahquamenon, Bond Falls and Pictured Rocks. Fall color usually peaks from late September to early October, making it one of the most popular times to visit. Winter is long and snowy, and some falls freeze into impressive ice formations, with ice climbing near Munising, but many roads are not plowed. 275 Google reviews make it a well-known stop. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit.
Safety
Stay behind railings and off wet rock, never climb on the falls, and keep children within arm's reach near the water. Check the weather panel above for flood or storm alerts before you set out; water levels can rise fast after upstream rain. Our waterfall safety guide covers the most common hazards.
Respect the place
Pack out everything you bring, stay on established paths to limit erosion, and leave rocks and plants where they are. See Leave No Trace at waterfalls.

History of the area
Older maps and records also list it as Bocco Falls.
The federal gazetteer describes it this way: Along the course of the Sturgeon River, SW of the mouth of Bocco Creek, 1.3 mi S of Alberta and 9.2 mi SSW of L'Anse.
Canyon Falls was entered in the Geographic Names Information System on January 1, 1991, and it appears on the USGS Vermilac 7.5-minute topographic map.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names made a formal decision on its name on January 1, 1964.
Its neighbors on the map tell the story of the surrounding land: Bocco Creek (stream, 0.1 mi) and Plumbago Creek (stream, 1.3 mi).
Marquette and Baraga Highlands. The rugged hills between L'Anse and Marquette, including the Huron Mountains, hold dozens of falls on rivers such as the Sturgeon, Dead and Yellow Dog. Canyon Falls in Baraga County sits at the head of a narrow rock gorge on the Sturgeon River south of L'Anse, and Dead River Falls in Marquette County is a sequence of drops through a rocky, wooded gorge. Many falls in these counties lie at the end of rough two-track roads. Southward, Dickinson, Delta and Menominee counties have gentler terrain, with falls on rivers draining toward Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
