Getting there

Koosah Falls sits about 23 miles west of Sisters in Linn County. Navigate to the coordinates 44.34401, -122.00062, which mark the waterfall itself; the trailhead or parking area may be some distance away. Visitors reach it on foot by trail. Check the current trail map for distance and elevation before you go.

Open directions in Google Maps or Apple Maps, or view the map on the Koosah Falls listing. Navigation apps sometimes route onto seasonal forest roads, so check road status if you are heading into the mountains.

Oregon's falls are mostly on public land: the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, national forests such as the Mount Hood, Willamette, Umpqua and Deschutes, and state parks including Silver Falls. Many national forest trailheads require a recreation pass such as the Northwest Forest Pass, and several state parks charge day-use parking fees. In recent years, the busiest stretch of the Historic Columbia River Highway has used a seasonal timed-use permit system, so check current requirements before driving there in summer. Parking at Multnomah Falls and other Gorge sites fills early on weekends. Hazards include slick mossy basalt, cliff edges, cold and powerful water, falling rock, winter ice, and wildfire-related trail closures. Stay behind railings and on maintained trails.

What to bring

This checklist is tailored to Koosah Falls based on what visitors report and the conditions typical of Oregon. For the complete list, see our waterfall hike packing guide.

  • Offline map and coordinates. Save 44.34401, -122.00062 and download offline maps; cell service is often weak near waterfalls.
  • Shoes with real grip. Rock near falling water stays wet and slick even in dry weather.
  • Water and a snack. More than you think you need, even for a short walk.
  • A light rain layer. Spray from the falls and quick-moving showers can soak you.
  • Camera and a small tripod. Visitors have shared 1,121 photos of it; a tripod lets you shoot silky water in low light.
  • Headlamp. In case your visit runs later than planned; check sunset time in the conditions panel above.

How to prepare

Timing

Oregon's waterfall seasons vary by region. West of the Cascades, rain-fed falls in the Gorge and Coast Range run highest from November through May, with spring offering the best mix of full flow, green moss and longer daylight. Winter visits can be spectacular, but east winds through the Gorge sometimes bring ice storms that coat trails and roads. In the High Cascades, falls on snowmelt-fed rivers such as the McKenzie and North Umpqua peak in late spring and early summer, though roads and trails at higher elevations may remain snowbound into June. Summer is dry, and smaller coastal falls shrink, but snow-fed and spring-fed falls keep running. Fall brings the return of rain in October or November and vine maple color. Wildfire smoke can affect visibility in late summer. 218 Google reviews suggest steady but manageable traffic outside peak weekends.

Safety

Stay behind railings and off wet rock, never climb on the falls, and keep children within arm's reach near the water. Check the weather panel above for flood or storm alerts before you set out; water levels can rise fast after upstream rain. Our waterfall safety guide covers the most common hazards.

Respect the place

Pack out everything you bring, stay on established paths to limit erosion, and leave rocks and plants where they are. See Leave No Trace at waterfalls.
