Waterfalls Near Atlanta

Atlanta does not have a famous waterfall inside the city limits, but north Georgia's national forest and state parks put several strong day trips within about an hour and a half. Amicalola Falls, Georgia's tallest cascade at 729 feet, is about 57 miles north in Amicalola Falls State Park, with a short accessible overlook trail if you skip the 604 stairs. Anna Ruby Falls near Helen and Helton Creek Falls near Vogel State Park sit a little farther out in Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.

West and northwest, Noccalula Falls in Gadsden and De Soto Falls near Fort Payne, Alabama, stretch the same radius and pair well with a Talladega or Little River Canyon loop. Most of these stops are short walks from a parking lot, so you can stack two or three in a day if you start early.

Late winter and spring after rain give the best flow. Summer weekends fill forest pullouts like Helton Creek early, and Georgia's state park day pass is now $10 per vehicle, so plan parking before you leave the metro.
